On this day in setlist history, Tyler, the Creator live debuted his fifth studio album, Igor in its entirety. The show took place just days after the album was released on May 17, 2019 at an unknown venue in Los Angeles and was promoted exclusively by Apple Music.
Similar to how we all consume live music nowadays, Apple Music simultaneously livestreamed the event to their site so that viewers at home could join in as well. Fans applied for the exclusive, free of charge tickets via the event webpage throughout the weekend leading up to the show.
The application page requested standard personal information to apply for the tickets, but also included a more important qualifier. Applicants were asked to "Complete the lyrics," to songs that only a tried and true Tyler, the Creator fan would be able to do. The selected show-goers were awarded with a ticket for themselves and a guest as well as either a "priority" or "standby" ticket, which meant more tickets would be provided than spots at the performance.
Luckily for the fans who weren’t able to make it to the live performance, the stream was a huge hit and just as entertaining. According to Reddit users, the rapper took time in between each live debut to offer intimate backstory details of each track- Jack White played guitar for “ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?” and Tyler originally wrote “EARFQUAKE” for Justin Bieber and Rihanna.
As Tyler, the Creator’s biggest success yet, Igor went on to debut at #1 on the U.S. Billboard charts, becoming in the artist’s first #1 album. Igor was also awarded for Best Rap Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards in January 2020.
You can purchase the performance on Apple Music if you missed out or want to relive the experience.
