Work From Home: Spencer Chamberlain from Underoath

Given that we’re still in a pandemic and a large chunk of concert dates have been pushed until 2021, you may be wondering what your favorite musicians are up to. Are they side-hustling as bakers? Learning a new language? Making big plans for the inevitable comeback? Thanks to technology, we can check in. A couple months ago, we did just that with Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath.

Work From Home: Spencer Chamberlain from Underoath
What Spencer is working on in lockdown:
"I have a home studio set up to allow me to not go crazy. So I’ve been writing tons of music, producing music for other people. We’ve started to work on more Underoath music, kind of in the early stages of making the follow up to Erase Me. Me and Aaron, our drummer, talked about different ways to connect with some of the fans and Underoath fans are always so loyal and so cool about collecting stuff, that’s why we’ve always had really extensive vinyls. When I write lyrics for the band I’m always kind of drawing, it’s just something I’ve always done because it’s fun or because my mind wanders or I draw myself something to remind myself of what I was really trying to portray in the song.”

"I put that out there on my Instagram and I got so many orders. They’re all different and personalized to whoever orders it. As a music fan and a collector, if I got something from Trent Reznor or Thom Yorke, I’d frame it and put it on on my wall. I hope it’d be something worth framing, so I take my time. That idea that Aaron and I had to connect with fans and it turned into ‘Oh my god, how can I keep up with all this work?’"
Imagining the first show back:
"I CAN imagine because Underoath did break up. So the first show back was like, 'OH MY GOD’ and I think that’s what it’s going to kind of resemble."
Best Underoath song for scary or confusing times:
"“To Whom It May Concern” the last song on Define The Great Line, because we talk about that visual of being at the end of a very long road but knowing there’s a light at the end of the tunnel kind of thing. That song is very relative to what this is, I guess. And it’s funny, we have a song called “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door” from our first record and on the cover of that record, if you’re not familiar with it, is a lady with a face mask on."
