Metallica Performs 16-Song Setlist for Drive-In Concert Film

Last week was quite the eventful week for Metallica and fans, the band put their #MetallicaMondays livestream series to bed, airing the final livestream of the series on Monday, August 24. Then days later they released their live album S&M2 on August 28 followed by the premiere of Pandemica on August 29, a concert filmed for the big screen and played across over 300+ North American drive-in theaters, presented by Encore Drive-In Nights!

Metallica played a no-audience concert on August 10 at a then-secret location which was edited and then mixed together by the bands top-notch production team for an end result that gave fans a brand new Metallica live experience. This experience also marked their first full-production concert since September 8, 2019.

So what went down during the drive-in concert film? Let's take a look at our setlist.fm data to explore what they played at the one-night only drive-in event.

The concert was filmed on August 10 in Sonoma County, California at Gundlach Bundschu winery, about a 30-minute drive from the band's headquarters in San Rafael, California. Metallica rehearsed for weeks while concert crew stayed in 30 rooms at Sonoma's El Pueblo Inn for nearly two weeks. How they kept the location a secret is beyond us in this day and age.

The show opened with "Hardwired" and moved through songs from seven of their studio releases including Master of Puppets, Kill em All and Reload. Ride the Lightning's "Creeping death," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Fade to Black" which only made the setlist 3 times in 2019 also made the cut. The drive-in concert experience closed with their iconic hit "Enter Sandman" which they played for the 1,353rd time that night.
