Encore Interview: Nick Cannon

Actor, comedian, musician, and creator of hip hop tv series "Wild N Out," Nick Cannon, stopped by our Setlist.fm studio ahead of taking his show on the road last month. The Wild N Out Live tour kicked-off August 16th in Minneapolis and runs through October 6th in Oakland, California. For the first part of our interview with Nick Cannon, visit our Tour Update with the celebrity entrepreneur here.

In addition to giving us an overview of the Wild N Out Live Tour, and how he and his team prepared for the run, we got candid with Cannon about paying it forward and finding out how Wild N Out is going into the classroom.

Pay it forward:

Nick Cannon: I get off on introducing new talent and discovering people and I think as one kind of accomplishes many things in their career you kind of have an understanding that you have to keep the cycle going, that you have to pay it forward.

And all the people that have given me opportunities and platforms, it’s like now it’s my turn to do that and to try to create that platform as big and as broad as possible

Building a tribe:

Nick Cannon: I always say you gotta keep cooking while the pot is hot but keep as many irons in the fire as possible. So when you create that momentum, and in the music industry it definitely works that way. Once you have the hottest artist, he then spawns as many artists as he has under him or her so with that mentality I just apply it to every aspect of entertainment and content and consumer products. It’s really like you know I have created this incredible movement. Pardon upon but it’s really just people who want to be great, who want to you know, do their best and may not have come from the best circumstances but they are creating opportunity for themselves.

Wild N Out school:

Nick Cannon: The second cities and the ground links, where you know there are incubation systems for the next big stars in comedy. And I feel like Wild N Out has already proven to be that. I mean when you think about how many cast members have gone on to have their own shows and be on Saturday Night Live and you know movies, and rap careers. We’ve done it all since 2004, and now that we’re expanding all our verticals, like we have wild n out sports bars, arcades, comedy clubs. So why wouldn’t we have a curriculum based format? Especially when we can go into all these schools. If you go to every college or even highschool, they have a Wild N Out night

Never Been Done Before:

Nick Cannon: I mean it was hard to describe it when I created the show, because there was nothing like it on television and now that were taking it on the road, there is still nothing else where you are able to implement comedy, as well as hip hop as well as it being interactive and exclusive. I mean we’re bringing audience members on stage to play the games, you know the wild n out girls are there, we’re casting for the next seasons there. So its something that has never really been done before.
