Many legendary musicians lived short and tragic lives, and Danny Whitten is no exception. The talented songwriter and guitarist is best known as the second guitarist and vocalist in Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Although his time in the band only lasted about four years, Whitten was a integral part of NYCH's debut album Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, singing with Young on the three most influential songs off the album: "Cinnamon Girl," "Down By The River," and "Cowgirl in the Sand."

Whitten's final ride with Crazy Horse happened on March 28, 1970 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in California, according to setlist.fm. They performed a 16-song set that featured mostly songs from Neil's solo material, Buffalo Springfield catalog, and CSNY days. They played only four originals, all in the last half of the set.

The show opened with Buffalo's "On the Way Home," followed by "I Am a Child," which NYCH would go on to play many times during their tours. Since it was still early in Young's career, a lot of earlier hits made it into the set like "The Loner," "Helpless," and "Winterlong."

The first NYCH song they busted out was "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere." They ended the set on the Crazy Horse anthems "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl in the Sand."

Unfortunately, Whitten was succumbed to his drug addiction which took his life on November 18, 1972 at the age of 29. That very day, Young had to fire Whitten from performing in his touring band in promotion of Harvest.

"We were rehearsing with him and he just couldn't cut it. He couldn't remember anything. He was too out of it. [...] That night the coroner called me and told me he'd died. That blew my mind. F*cking blew my mind. I loved Danny. I felt responsible." Young later added "It just all came down on him. He was engulfed by this drug. That was too bad. Because Danny had a lot to give, boy. He was really good."
